With the import of 574,046 tons of fresh fruit, China is the second largest destination for Chilean fresh fruit. Cherries, with 63% of the total volume, are the most exported product.

Chilean cherries, whose season is currently in full swing, arrive at a crucial time in China: the Chinese New Year, which makes them the perfect gift, since in that culture, the fruit is a symbol of good omens and prosperity. In 2024, the festivity will take place on February 10.

In the framework of the start of the 2023-2024 campaign for Chilean cherries, and fresh fruit in general, Zhao Zhi, deputy general manager of Jiangnonghui Market (Guanzhou), the largest wholesale market for imported fruit in China, visited Chile. The visit was organized by the Cherry Committee through the Chilean Fruit Office in China.

Zhao Zhi expressed her interest in visiting the Chilean orchards and packing facilities, as well as in connecting with the sector and establishing links with medium and small producers. Claudia Soler, executive director of the Chilean Fruit Cherry Committee, highlighted how the Chinese professional wished to give a boost to smaller importers in her market.

Zhao Zhi said that the Jiangnongh fruit wholesale market plays a crucial role in the reception and marketing of Chilean fruit, especially cherries. She also said that each season they handle about 18,000 containers of Chilean fruit from January to December.

During the visit, they toured orchards, cherry packing facilities, supermarkets and the Lo Valledor wholesale market. The visit coincided with relevant events for the sector, such as the launch of the new Frutas de Chile brand and the presentation of Cherry Express in the port of San Antonio. Claudia Soler stressed the importance of strengthening market relations, focusing on Chile’s technologies, innovations and quality work.
