Australian cherries strengthen their presence in Asia with 22% growth in export value

The Australian cherry industry closed the 2025/26 season with positive results, as increased demand and better prices for premium fruit boosted both the volume and value of exports, according to Cherry Growers Australia.

Through February 2026, shipments reached 5,456 tons, with an approximate value of US$78.67 million. This represented a year-on-year increase of 13% in export volume and 22% in value.

The regions of Tasmania and Victoria contributed more than 90% of the exported fruit.

Asia is the focus of australian cherries
The industry benefited from air logistics that allowed Australian cherries to reach key Asian markets within 72 hours of harvest, helping to maintain fruit quality during transport.

Cherry Growers Australia CEO Penny Measham noted that the results were also boosted by coordinated industry planning and efficient quality management.

“This season demonstrates what is possible when the industry consistently delivers high-quality fruit and works together under a clear national strategy,” she said.

Hong Kong remained the top export destination for Australian cherries, while Vietnam and China saw significant growth, driven by late-season demand and supply availability.

“Strong export growth, improved market returns, and repeat purchases from our key Asian markets reflect confidence in Australian cherries as a premium product,” Measham added.

From field to consumer
The domestic market also posted positive results in terms of quality, which the industry attributed to management practices and investments in post-harvest quality systems.

“Quality is the foundation of everything we do. When we maintain quality from the orchard to the consumer, we protect our reputation, strengthen demand, and generate better results for growers,” the executive stated.

The 2025/26 season also represented progress toward the industry’s long-term goal: developing a productive, profitable, and sustainable Australian cherry sector.
