In total, 5 million kilos of Jerte cherries and 2.5 million kilos of Jerte picota cherries were certified. The Council’s president, José Antonio Tierno, highlighted the high volume of product marketed, especially at the European level, as well as the high quality of the certified cherries and picotas.
This was the first season to feature, from start to finish, the new certified varieties – Burlat, Van, and Lapins – included in the Specifications in 2025.
“Having more certified fruit has been a very positive aspect for the PDO because it has allowed us to have product available on the market for a longer period, although it has also resulted in a lower selling price than in the previous season,” Tierno stated in a press release.
The Council explained that the good harvest was made possible by reasonably favorable weather conditions in recent months. Tierno explained that, apart from a period of rain at the beginning of the harvest and a hailstorm at the end, the weather cooperated with the fruit harvesting schedule.
“It is always a joy when the season can proceed normally. In this way, the hard work carried out by our farmers for so many months comes to fruition,” the president said.
Jerte cherries and picotas: A unique product
These cherries grow in the mountains and are cultivated using traditional methods. This family-run farm guarantees a unique flavor and quality in the market.
Of the more than 100 varieties of cherry and picota, only eight bear the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) seal of quality. The picota deserves special mention, a unique product of the Jerte Valley and its surroundings. This fruit is distinguished by its lack of a stem and its smaller size compared to other cherries, which contributes to a sweeter flavor and a crisper texture.
“The picota is the jewel in our crown. It is a unique product of our region and stands out for its exceptional flavor. Sometimes, the best things come in small packages,” concluded Tierno.
