Epigen regenerative agriculture certification comes to cherries

Spain now boasts a new cherry profile distinguished by its higher content of healthy sugars, thanks to Epigen Regenerative Agriculture certification.

Spain officially has a differentiated cherry variety, produced by the Aragonese company SAT La Rinconada. While it may look like any other cherry, its distinguishing feature lies in its sugar content.

SAT La Rinconada has certified 48 hectares of its 110 hectares of cherry orchards with Regenerative Agriculture certification under the Epigen Healthy Bite model.

It is the first Spanish cherry company to certify this product under this protocol, which has two key differentiators. The first is the higher level of healthy sugars in the cherry, achieving “the best natural expression of the cherry,” explains Rubén Valero, the company’s director.

The other key advantage of Epigen Healthy Bite certification is the presence of 22-25 percent more total amino acids and a higher profile of organic acids, which directly impacts the flavor.

One noteworthy point is the antioxidant power of cherries grown under the Epigen Regenerative Agriculture certification by Ceritplanet, which is not found in other cherries grown worldwide.

Other advantages
Businessman and producer Rubén Valero (pictured) highlights other advantages he will discuss in the next edition of F&H magazine, such as the healthier and greener state of the cherry orchards.

“The orchards have achieved an unrecognizable green and fresh color without increasing water usage, since the regenerative agriculture protocol directly reduces water and nutrient consumption,” Valero explains.

SAT La Rinconada’s European clientele -strongly linked to the German market- has been enjoying cherries with the Epigen Regenerative Agriculture certification since this week.
