José Ignacio Covarrubias and the role of calcium and potassium as essential nutrients for good fertilization

The University of Chile professor and specialist in mineral nutrition for fruit trees spoke with Smartcherry TV about the importance of fertilization in spring.

The master’s degree in agricultural sciences and doctor of fruit tree cultivation explained that the importance of this task lies in providing the crop with the right conditions at a time when the tree begins the process of cell division, which is one of the two factors that will determine the final size of the fruit, a characteristic highly in demand today in destination markets.

Furthermore, he mentioned that the key to fruit management techniques, which include fertilization and irrigation, should focus on maintaining an adequate leaf-to-fruit ratio. Nutrition should provide the necessary, sufficient, and not excessive supplements to maintain this ratio, thus producing large, well-sized, sweet, flavorful, and firm fruit, which is what consumers demand.
