Mendoza Begins the 2024 Cherry Season

Mendoza Begins the 2024 Cherry Season

The varieties they cultivate include Royal Dawn, Brooks, Nimba, Pacific Red, Santina, and Lapins, among others.

Güizzo Frutas Frescas S.A., located in Mendoza, officially started the commercial harvest of fresh cherries on October 22, marking the beginning of a new season that promises increased volume and outstanding quality.

“After a generous winter with ample chill hours and a thermal accumulation that, although it began below normal in August, provided us with spring-like days in September and October, we are excited to kick off a new season with greater volume and excellent quality,” says Nicolás Güizzo, the company’s Technical Manager.

Engineer Nicolás Güizzo adds, “This year we have introduced a significant novelty, as in addition to starting with the traditional early varieties from Zaiger like Royal Lee, on October 21, we began harvesting the first batches of cherries from the Nimba variety, coming from the new plantations established in the last two years on our farms in Luján de Cuyo and Valle de Uco.”

Güizzo also emphasizes that “what distinguishes producing cherries in Mendoza is having a consistent supply of winter chill, with more than 40 chill portions. After that, a sunny and dry climate towards the end of winter and the beginning of spring allows for the accumulation of sufficient degree days for the early varieties to start the harvest early, typically from weeks 42 and 43. It is important to highlight that our focus in Mendoza is not to compete on volume, but to capitalize on the strategic opportunity to offer early cherries of exceptional quality.”

The company, established in Mendoza for over 40 years, has specialized in producing early cherries. These cherries are entirely marketed by air to the European Union, Brazil, the UK, the Middle East, and the Far East, in addition to supplying the main retailers and wholesalers in the Argentine domestic market.

Currently, the company manages 50 hectares of its own production, primarily in the areas of Luján de Cuyo and Valle de Uco in Mendoza.
