Heatwave Boosts Fruit Sales in the United Kingdom

Amid an intense heatwave sweeping the United Kingdom, supermarket chain Tesco has reported record demand for fresh fruit, with a growth of nearly 10% in the last three weeks.

Among the products most sought after by Britons to stay cool and healthy are strawberries, cherries, watermelons, pineapples, grapes, and bananas.

According to Tesco, this phenomenon responds to the need to maintain adequate hydration, in line with the recommendations of the British National Health Service (NHS), which suggests incorporating foods with high water content during periods of extreme heat.

Record Sales and Exceptional Quality
The company also attributes the upswing in sales to the high quality of the fruit, especially that grown locally. According to Tesco Fruit Buying Manager, Simon Reeves, the favorable weather with more hours of sunshine has contributed to a harvest of excellent flavor and appearance.

“Demand for fruit during the recent heatwaves has been the highest on record for a three-week period. We are working closely with our suppliers to keep shelves stocked,” said Reeves.

With a third heatwave in less than a month and temperatures above 30°C, Tesco is also preparing for strong demand for typical British summer products.

This phenomenon reinforces a growing trend: fruit as the star of consumption habits during heatwaves, combining hydration, flavor, and nutrition.
