The agronomist and professor at the University of Chile spoke with Smartcherry about the ideal stage for applying calcium, emphasizing that the flow of calcium to the fruit has a very short window, from fruit set until it reaches approximately 7 to 8 millimeters in diameter, and that this is also the time when the fruit transpires.
After this stage, the fruit stops transpiring, and calcium no longer reaches the fruit. Therefore, the professional urged beginning fertilization programs for this mineral in the soil with one or two foliar calcium applications very early to maximize the accumulation of this nutrient in the fruit.
He also recommended not watering during this time due to the high humidity in the soil.
