In just a few days, the highly anticipated cherry harvest in the Río Cinca Valley will kick off, marking the start of the Spanish season with the exclusive Cherries Glamour. This year, the harvest is expected to begin on March 24, several days later than last season, but with a significant increase in production, rising from 60 tons last year to 80 tons this year, featuring fruit of very good quality.
The secret to Río Cinca’s ability to harvest cherries in late winter/early spring—something that no other company has managed to replicate—lies in advanced technology and the passion for cherries of the people who started this project in 2000. After many years of learning and trial and error, they have successfully implemented the R&D that allows them to be the only Spanish company to achieve this ultra-early greenhouse cherry.
The Cherries Glamour, recognized throughout Europe for their exceptional quality, come from varieties of field cherry trees cultivated under specific conditions that allow their ripening throughout winter. They control both the amount of light and temperature in their fully climate-controlled multi-span greenhouses under optimal parameters to ensure that the fruit develops on the trees as if it were growing outdoors. This method prevents any acceleration in the ripening process, allowing them to offer excellent fruit to the market. Additionally, by growing without wind exposure or adverse weather conditions, their Cherries Glamour exhibit a more pronounced quality and shine compared to open-field cherries.
Starting next week, the main gourmet centers in Europe will receive these exclusive Cherries Glamour, and in the second part of the campaign—in early May—the open-field cherries from the 450 hectares cultivated by the farmers of Río Cinca will reach various European retailers. This year, they are starting with very good prices of around 80-90 euros per kilo, and, as in every campaign, they have already received significant interest from buyers all over Europe.
With this success, many companies from Europe, Israel, or Chile have tried to copy them, but Río Cinca remains the producer of the first cherries of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. They are currently in the process of expanding production to offer a larger volume of Cherries Glamour in future campaigns, with approximately 80,000 m² of greenhouses currently in production and another 30,000 m² under construction.
The cherry season in España promises to be exciting, and fruit lovers are eager to enjoy the freshness and quality of these Cherries Glamour.
