The information indicates that the figures exceed those obtained in 2024, a year in which production was affected by the rains that fell during the fruit harvest.
Josรฉ Antonio Tierno, president of the Jerte Cherry D.O.P., emphasized that “unlike previous years, no significant losses have been recorded because the weather has been favorable and has not damaged the fruit, which has allowed the campaign to develop normally and with good results.”
In total, the Jerte Cherry D.O.P. has certified 1,300,000 kilos of produce, with the flagship cherry of this Designation of Origin, the Picota cherry, playing a significant role. Therefore, “the overall harvest results are very satisfactory. Particularly, the figures achieved for the Picota cherry, which has seen growth this season compared to last year,” said Tierno.
“Once again, this year’s harvest has stood out for its sweet, savory flavor and crunchy texture. Only the size has been slightly affected as a result of the high temperatures, unusual for this time of year,” explains the president of the D.O.P.
This season, the Council certified three new cherry varieties: Van, Lapins, and Burlat. The organization indicated that their addition has had a positive impact on the campaign, as it has allowed certified product to be available on the market for a longer period, which translates into greater visibility for the D.O.P.
The Lapins variety has played a particularly prominent role, accounting for 30 to 40% of total cherry production.
Furthermore, and as a novelty, this year the later cherry varieties were marketed alongside the four picota varieties protected by the Designation of Origin: Ambrunรฉs, Pico Negro, Pico Limรณn, and Pico Colorado.
