In a stunning revelation, the January 2024 Non-Copper – Non-Lithium Exports Report by ProChile’s Market Intelligence Department, in collaboration with the National Customs Service, showcases a remarkable surge in cherry shipments. Clocking in at an impressive US$1.555 billion, this marks a substantial 27.5% surge compared to the same period last year.
This milestone not only signifies the highest historical record spanning from 2007 but also underscores a dual triumph of increased export volume and enhanced international prices.
Highlighting the focal point of this achievement, nearly 93% of cherry exports in January 2024 found their way to the expansive Chinese market. Valued at US$1.447 billion, this segment witnessed a remarkable 30.8% uptick compared to its counterpart in 2023.
The timing of this export boom synchronized seamlessly with the festivities of the Chinese New Year, a period synonymous with the gifting of cherries, symbolizing prosperity and good fortune owing to their vibrant crimson hue. Ignacio Fernรกndez, ProChile’s general director, lauded this feat, stating, “The trajectory of cherry exports is nothing short of extraordinary. From humble beginnings two decades ago, where exports barely touched US$36 million, to a staggering US$2.000 billion in 2023, reflecting a colossal surge of over 5,000%. Chile has firmly established itself as the global frontrunner in cherry supply, a testament to the ingenuity, innovation, and sheer dedication of our producers and the entire supply chain. Our next frontier remains market diversification.”
