Guests will gather to learn about the 2025/26 season, future production growth projections, and will have the opportunity to taste Tasmania’s first fresh export cherries.
Peter Cornish, CEO of Fruit Growers Tasmania, noted that Hong Kong is a very important and long-standing market for Tasmanian cherries, ranking among the top three export destinations. Last season, Hong Kong received 22% of Tasmania’s total export volume.
“There are complex dynamics in the competitive Asian markets, with large volumes of imported fruit entering the market in preparation for the festive season. We understand that these shipments continue to put downward pressure on price expectations. However, we believe our fruit is distinctly different,” he said.
Characteristics and condition of Tasmanian cherries this season
Tasmanian cherries are typically dark in color, large, and sweet, and arrive in Asiaโvia air freightโwithin 72 hours of being picked.
“Our cherries are hand-picked,” Cornish said. โThey are cooled to 1โ2 degrees Celsius and then carefully packed in boxes to maintain their freshness. There is generally a range of sizes, including many fruits 34 mm or larger. We hope customers will recognize and appreciate the quality we offer.โ
Due to cooler conditions during spring and early summer in Australia’s southernmost island state, the first Tasmanian cherries destined for export are arriving slightly later than usual.
“This should work in our favor, as Lunar New Year 2026 will also be a bit later,” Cornish commented.
“As 2026 is the Year of the Fire Horse, we feel it symbolizes the passion and determination of our growers, as well as the importance of our business relationships in a challenging trading environment,” he concluded.
